Muktinath , Saligramam is the only Divya Desam in Nepal. Divya Desams follow Thenkalai or Vadakalai modes of worship. In Divya desam, Divya means "premium" or "divine" and Desam indicates "place" temple. The word azhwar in Tamil, means one who immerses oneself into the ocean of the countless attributes of god. Azhwars are considered the twelve supreme devotees of Vishnu , who were instrumental in popularising Vaishnavism during the 5th-8th centuries AD. The religious works of these saints in Tamil , songs of love and devotion, are compiled as Nalayira Divya Prabandham containing verses and the temples revered in their songs are classified as Divya desam.

The devotional verses sung on Lord Vishnu, by the 12 Alwars, powered up the Bakthi movement. Many of the Alwars lived before 25, years and their compilation of 4, verses, named the Divya Prabandha, mention the holiness Dhivya Desams of Lord Vishnu. Among the temples, 84 of them are in Tamilnadu, while the other temples are spread in Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat and one is in Nepal. Totally, temples are in this world, while the final 2 Divyadesams are in celestial abode, the Vaikundam, where the Lord Vishnu resides and Thirparkadal, the ocean of milk.
