Confesiunile unui cafegiu by Gheorghe Florescu. Michael Scott 's review Jun 17, Confesiunile unui cafegiu is difficult to review. On the one hand, it's an account of one of the survivors of the Communist regime in Romania, one who had access to some of the high officials between mids and late s. As such, it's an important writ on an important topic, one that still raises heart-felt questions in the Romania of s.
On the other hand, it's difficult to tell where the story-teller has chosen to alter his memories; there are numerous signs that some of the material is not entirely or even not at all correct. As such, it's more a way to settle old accounts than a true memoir. The book covers the long life of Gheorghe Florescu , with a focus on his being the owner of a small but highly regarded coffee shop in the center of Communist Bucharest.
Confesiunile covers most of what I expected: the harsh reality of both daily and behind-bars life, the notorious and the less-known characters from the Romanian high-life, the country-affecting events that include the devastating tremor of and the regime-change of It's also written in fake-polite Romanian, which only adds flavor. Two main parts attracted my interest in this book: the rise of Florescu through the ranks of "entrepreneurs", and the period spent by Florescu under arrest and in prison.
The former is difficult to traverse for somebody who lived even just a bit in those days: it's a manual of corruption, encroaching, imposture, nepotism, laissez-faire, and mob-like activity; Florescu is a part of this machinery and profits from it.
The thought of reading about the adventures of yet another thief almost made me stop reading. I would have been wrong; to the careful reader, this part includes important and diverse material.
The part about the fall of Florescu is straightforward, given the topic: a bit about torture, a bit about a Kafkaesque judicial system, a bit about an overcrowded and careless prison system although this reminded me more of a book I read when I was a kid, Papillon , than of the forced labor camps in Ivan Denisovich or Archipelago Gulag. Although thinner in content and space, I liked the view on the Revolution and the years after; although without an answer, Florescu asks many of the right questions.
Major dislike: Florescu claimsand seems to believe itthat coffee and the lack thereof played an important role in the increased discontent in Romania. All-in-all, it's a surprisingly good book and I'm glad I did not stop reading after the first hundred or so pages. Recommended if you have a strong background in books about Communism; beware of bias.
