The Assimil method for teaching foreign languages is through the listening of audio cd's and the reading of an accompanying book, one side native language, one side foreign language.
This method is focused on learning whole sentences, for an organic learning of the grammar. It begins with a long passive phase of only reading and listening, and eventually adds active exercises. Most books contain around lessons, with the active phase starting on Lesson The word Assimil comes from assimilation.
Several different series are published: With Ease series, which teach basic rules of grammar and a vocabulary of words; Perfectionnement series, which teaches more advanced idiosyncrasies and idioms of the target language; Business series, which focuses on vocabulary related to international business; Idioms series, which teaches common idioms;.

I'm not sure it would be appropriate for a beginner, but this book is a wonderful tool for those keen on discovering the "Latinitatem vivam".
A few typos remain, though; plus at least one pronunciation mistake, in 78th lesson, 10, where I'm hearing "patrones" instead of "patronus". Furthermore, I wonder why they didn't record the exercises, that would have been invaluable and in my opinion more useful than the "pronuntiatio ecclesiastica", which sounds here essentially the same as "pronuntiatio restituta".
Finally, I don't understand why the carmina are only recorded on "pronuntiationis ecclesiasticae" CDs. One person found this helpful. This is a really good course, but it would be best to use it along with other more traditional courses like Cambridge, Ecce Romani or Oxford. This course will help you with "thinking in Latin". It is "modern conversational Latin" but you still have all the same verb forms, and noun endings etc.
And sometimes I have to use Google translator. See all reviews from the United Kingdom. Top international reviews. Translate all reviews to English. Comodo, curioso, provocante quel tanto che basta a farti capire l'importanza del nostro passato europeo.

All'interno si possono trovare numerosi e svariati testi: dai proverbi alle ninne nanne, dalle barzellette al Piccolo Principe rigorosamente in latino.
SIcuramente divertente e nice to have, ma per chi vuole imparare il latino consiglierei ben altro testo. Lo apprezzo molto proprio per il fatto che gli argomenti vengono affrontati come se questa lingua fosse ancora parlata.

I bought the new book to this unique conversational Latin course on the recommendation of a teacher last fall, but the translations and notes were originally in French, while the revised book was in Italian. English speakers - be aware the book has no English translation, all translations and notes are in Italian.
There is a free online course Sermo Latin that provides support for English speakers wanting to use this course, and I obtained the French recordings for that, but they were so difficult to follow that I ended up giving up on the course. What a difference there is with these new recordings. In Latin, every letter is pronounced, but the old recordings made "h's" and "r's" particularly difficult to hear, and many of the vowels were not clear, so that I had to constantly go back to the book to understand what I was hearing.
The new recordings are pronounced such that you can clearly hear and understand each word. In the early lessons, there is more of a pause after each line to facilitate the user of the course repeating the audio after hearing it, if you, like me, benefit from this technique. The old recordings had no such pauses which caused me to often have to reverse the audio to hear the part that got cut off. This active step of repeating the text out loud is necessary to the method according to many users of the Assimil method I have found for one example, look up "The Language Geek" - How to use and Assimil course.
After the early lessons, the dialogue speeds up to a normal pace, so that one either listens or pauses the recording if you want to repeat back, or write what you hear, etc. There IS a noticeable Italian accent in the recordings, in particular, the ends of all the "t's" almost sound as if there is an "a" after it. But comparing this and the French recordings, it is a huge improvement, it is easier to filter that idiosyncrasy out rather than to try to fill in all the missing sounds from the old recordings.
In fact, they get so much of it right I am sure this is a non-issue, for example, when pronouncing the "ch" in the restored Classical pronunciation, you can clearly hear the "c" and the "h" but without the "c" being hammered.
It is very well done. The primary reason I did not give it five stars is the fact that the exercises were not recorded, only the lessons. Secondly, it would be awesome if they would publish this with English translations and notes, so I would not not have to join an online course to do this. One more comment, while I consider this a positive feature, some may find the small format book to be a problem. For me, however, it allows me to bring it with me in a purse or bag on the go.
The book is pretty sturdily bound, even though it is a paperback, printed on quality paper. The print is pretty standard size, however, not tiny. This will help me so much in my goal of mastering this course. The course itself is challenging, and not recommended for outright beginners in Latin. The grammar of Latin is more complex than most modern languages, so some basic understanding of Latin grammar prior to starting the course is beneficial, or at least obtaining additional grammar instruction from another source concurrently will be realistically needed by most learners.
But I have not run across its equal in developing spoken Latin skills. If you think Latin is a "dead" language, just follow Nancy Llewellyn, Luke Henderson, Salvi, and some of the others that are bringing spoken Latin more and more into the classroom, making it easier to learn as a language.
Note, I did not listen to the Ecclesiastical pronunciation recordings as I have not learned to pronounce Latin that way. I assume they have been recorded with the same careful attention. You've read the top international reviews. Unlimited One-Day Delivery and more.
