ASTM E covers the standard test method for pin-type bearing test of metallic materials. The ultimate strength and yield strength of a bearing material are determined from the data obtained in this test. The bearing material used in this test is a flat piece with a centered hole and near the edge. The pin used should fit snug in the hole. ASTM E specifies the hole diameter and distance from the edge of the bearing material. The test machine will grip one end of the plate test specimen, and the other end will grip the pin.

This test method covers a pin-type bearing test of metallic materials to determine bearing yield strength and bearing strength. NOTE 1—The presence of incidental lubricants on the bearing surfaces may significantly lower the value of bearing yield strength obtained by this method.

ASTM E238 Bearing Strength of Pins Test Equipment
ASTM E describes the determination of the bearing strength and the bearing yield strength of metallic materials by a pin-type bearing test. The bearing load is generally applied to the specimen through a close-fitting cylindrical pin that is harder and stronger than the test specimen. Bearing strength is defined as the maximum bearing stress which a material is capable of sustaining. Bearing yield strength is the bearing stress at which a material exhibits a specified limiting deviation from the proportionality of bearing stress to bearing strain. Bearing properties are useful in the comparison of materials and design of structures under conditions where the pin is not restricted.
