Blake couldn't reply, too occupied with gulping oxygen to try to form words. A dark head leaned over him, black hair falling around his shoulders. The sun had set an hour ago. Elise was tired, lack of sleep from this morning starting to catch up with her. Still, she didn't take Mencheres up on his offer to have someone else guard Blake while she rested. It seemed too cruel to pass Blake off to a stranger just so she could sleep, especially since people were acting like Blake was already dead.

Of course Bones, Cat and Mencheres are in it, with Mencheres playing a fairly significant supporting role. It was a good story, and I know it's a short, but Elise and Blake fell in love and couldn't live without each other in about a day - this is a little rushed, even for PNR.
Overall, it was a fun, quick read to tide us over until the next full length release in the Night Huntress universe. Oct 09, Wendy rated it liked it Shelves: reads , paranormal-scifi-romance , were-shifter-demon-faries-other , vampire , jeaniene-frost , i-own , pub , nook-book.
I gave it three stars because of how it was put together as an e-book. I loved the story even though it was too short. I know, I know, it was a short story to begin with.
What I found annoying about the e-book quality was occasionally when turning a page it would jump into the middle of something else entirely. Still relevant to the book, but no way of knowing what went on to get there, not to mention what had happened on the page it jumped from. Nov 26, Rachel rated it really liked it. Blake Turner had been a successful stock broker until he hit a pedestrian who flung herself into his moving car and killed her. Soon after, he began to experience black-outs, strange messages and bodies when he woke up.
Determined to kill himself to stop his possession by a demon, he meets Elise, a 98 year old vampire who cut herself off from humanity after a painful rejection by her human finance decades earlier. To save Blake from the demon, she has to kill him. Jan 27, Gils rated it liked it Shelves: vampire , romance , ebooks-i-own , urban-fantasy , Again, I wish these little interim stories had more to do with the night huntress novels.
While it is nice to see different characters, I would rather read about ones that have been previously introduced, even if their names were only mentioned once or twice.
Which is saddening. Nov 29, Diana rated it liked it Shelves: supernatural , vampires , novella. Elise has lived in seclusion since becoming a vampire, withdrawing from the world. She crosses paths with Blake, who is possessed by a demon, and is determined to save him. Cute but a little quick. Because there isn't a lot of time, there's a very quick falling in love that seems a bit too fast.
I also thought the demon didn't really put up enough of a fight, even to the point where Blake is actually able to drive to where they plan to try to kill the demon without any problems. Mar 25, Robin rated it liked it Shelves: paranormal-urban-fantasy. This novella is a sweet, pleasant dessert story--enjoyable but empty calories. Cameos by Bones, Cat and Mencheres are tie this story loosely to the Night Huntress world, but Blake and Elise make their only appearance here.
They are endearing characters but who cares when they are not part of the main story, which is full of characters I am already invested in. Courageous, kind possessed man meets shy, loner vampire. Dilemma and love ensue with sprinkle of pathos. Two bites and it's gone.
Mar 29, Barbara rated it it was amazing. Devil to Pay - Jeaniene Frost: I loved this story of the lonely vampire Elise who runs across the demon possessed Blake and determines to help him rid himself of the demon by helping him die on the Utah salt flats where the demon won't be able to possess anyone else. She has the help of her vampire sire Mencheres, who gets his own story told in Jeaniene's newest book, Eternal Kiss of Darkness.
This was a quite short story set in the Night Huntress Universe. We get very small cameos from Cat and Bones, and a larger one from Menecheres, but this story felt largely unnecessary to the larger tapestry. Blake and Elise made an interesting couple, and the lengths they went to to be together spoke of their devotion.
It was interesting to read, but not really necessary to understand the whole series. Mar 23, D. Devil to pay I am glad to pick up another novel of Jeaniene see Cat and Bone make a drop into a storyline. I miss them and there characters filling pages of twisted plots dealing with vamps. However, I enjoyed this novel and looking into others of hers that I haven't read. Which are very few because Jeaniene Frost has always been a worthy read.
Even if I moved on to many other authors. I always come back to check on to see if she has created more. Jul 21, Riverina Romantics rated it liked it Shelves: short-story , paranormal , demons. I enjoyed the majority of this story. I felt the connection between the two characters and enjoyed the drama of their struggle. What I didn't like was how it ended so quickly. There was barely even a 'happy for now' ending. You have all this in depth story, building up for a great love filled ending and it just fell flat and stopped so suddenly.
Jul 28, L-D rated it really liked it Shelves: novella , vampires , series , anthology. I read this short as part of the Dukes and Devil anthology. I liked Blake and Elise and Bones and Cat even made a cameo. I think the story was a little too short to fully develop Elise's character, but I think that Blake was developed nicely and you definitely empathized with his plight as a demon-possessed human with a good heart.
Aug 11, Megan rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Lori Wiggins. I really enjoyed this one. I loved the new characters, and would love to read more about them in the future if there is ever another book. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time and I could not put it down until I found out what happened.
It has action and romance in it and it had more of Mencheres in it who is always an interesting character so that was nice.
