Syllabus The course intends to outline the phonetic and phonological systems of contemporary standard Spanish. The fundamental concepts of Spanish phonetics, exemplified in detail with transcriptions, as well as those elements emerging from a contrastive analysis between the Italian and the Spanish systems, will be examined. The subject is divided into four parts, which correspond to the main fields of linguistics: phonetics and phonology, variation, morphology and syntax.
Linguistic norms and variation 1. Diatopic and social variation 2. Phonetics and Phonology 2. Sounds and phonemes in Spanish 2. Phonetic norm of Spanish 3. Morphology 3. Inflexional and derivational morphology 3. Lexical and phrasal categories 4. Categories and functions. Phrasal structures. Noun phrases: nouns, adjectives and determiners 4. Verb phrases 5. Sentence structure 5. Paradigmatic and syntagmatic relationships 5.
Simple, compound and complex sentences. Learning activities and methodology. The course will consist of Master Classes in which the main theoretical topic of the subject will be presented, and Tutorial Classes where learning activities such as the following will be conducted: - Comments on the course Reading and related activities.
Moreover, students will be expected to conduct the following autonomous activities: to complete the reading assignments indicated in Master Classes, to participate in the preparation of the group work to be presented in Tutorial Classes, and to individually prepare the exercises prior to each tutorial session.

The student be able to: o Consolidate knowledge to achieve a high level of language proficiency in oral and written skills. To develop oral and written skills, students should participate actively in class and perform tasks positively. These practices aim to prepare the student so that he can successfully overcome the compulsory tasks required for the final exam. These tasks will include:. Argumentative exposition 7 minutes approximately in which, based on a topic of general interest for discussion, will have to understand and expose the thesis that is defended, pay particular attention to the way in which it is argued, refer one's own opinion on the subject matter and provide a final conclusion. Also, the student will have to be able to answer a couple of questions open to debate.
